I know it is already basically December, but I am determined to catch up on this blog and this is the last one I really need to update! Everything else I want to write about can wait a little longer. Halloween this year did not look the way I expected it to, but we had a wonderful day anyway! (In your face, Covid!)
Rose makes every holiday more fun and more exciting. We spent the whole week leading up to Halloween doing a Ghost hunt that the city had put on. A "ghost" had stolen candy from the rec center *insert gasp from two year old, there is no greater crime!* and it was up to us to find the clues, solve them, and figure out where the ghost hid the candy. It was actually super fun for me to figure out where each of the clues was, over the course of the week we went to the library, center street, the city buildings, the cemetery, pioneer park, and then the rec center. One of the clues was a sudoku puzzle, one was a word search, one was a code. At the end we found out that the ghost felt bad and had brought the candy back to the recreation center and that if we went to the front desk, we would get candy. The ending was a bit disappointing because the person at the front desk had no idea what we were talking about so he gave us two juice boxes (which was not the candy we had been promised!) But, Rose had so much fun talking about the ghost and talking about how we were on a ghost hunt. and she was THRILLED that she got her own juice. (And thank you to inspired primary teachers who later that day brought a bag of candy IN A ghost bag! during nap time even, so that when Rose woke up I told her that the ghost had left candy for her on the kitchen table! And she couldn't stop talking about it for days.)
On the actual day of Halloween, we dressed up as Peter Pan (me), Wendy (Rose), and Tinkerbell (Lucy) (Rose says "I be Wendy and Lucy be Tinkerbell!") and went to the library to take pictures of my sister and her roommate with pumpkins on their heads. It was probably one of the most fun photoshoots I have ever done, and the Provo City Library was the perfect location! Also, it was a great way to spend our Halloween morning!
After the pumpkin head photoshoot, Emily went with Rose and Lucy and Me to the farmer's market, where they were doing trick or treating. I forgot to bring a grocery bag for Rose to put candy in, but Emily noticed Rose's little backpack in the car and brilliantly suggested Rose wear it on her front so that it would be easy to put candy inside. (Practical and also adorable to see a little two year old Wendy with a backpack worn on the front instead of her back.)
Rose probably got about 15 pieces of candy but she was thrilled. She loved saying "Happy Haween!" and she got very good at saying "thank you!" as she happily walked away with one more piece of candy in her back pack.
Later, in the evening, Ryan dressed up as my shadow and we walked to Center Street to see if there was any trick or treating going on over there. I think it had trick or treating earlier in the day but we were too late because everything was shut down, but people loved that Ryan was my shadow. We got lots of comments from people we passed. Ryan loved his costume because he didn't have to smile at anyone and no one could tell! On the way home we found two houses that had bowls of candy out front. One person had one of the candy slide/tube things and at the end of the tube it came out of the mouth of a monster like thing. Rose thought that was amazing and couldn't figure out how it worked. haha
I read that on Halloween you should let your kids decide how much Halloween candy they eat and that they will probably have more self control and eat less. So, I tried that out and let Rose eat as much as she wanted and she never got to that whole "self control" thing. I read the next day that you shouldn't do that until your kids are like 3. So, I figured out why Rose was lacking in self control. She just wanted to eat all of the candy right there and then. And she mostly did. But watching her dump her candy out and carefully sort them by color and talking about them was just too much fun. Her enthusiasm and excitement was contagious and I had a blast spending Halloween with her (and with Lucy, but Lucy wasn't too interested in most of the Halloween stuff, except for the snickers bar that she would have gotten if I hadn't moved my hand as fast. She's quick and she LOVES food. Especially food she isn't allowed to have.)
Oh, also! I'm so proud of myself for putting the costumes together!
Ryan's costume: a black morph suit from amazon, and a black felt hat with a black feather made by me
Kinsey's costume: XL green shirt found at DI and cut up to look like Peter Pan, green exercise leggings I already had, and brown boots and belt already owned, and a green felt hat with a red feather made by me.
Rose's costume: perfect blue dress prayed for and then found at DI (blessings of prayer), a blue ribbon from Michals, and a blue bow that we already had for her hair.
Lucy's costume: green scraps cut from a shirt I found at DI fabric glued to a white onesie, baby shoes painted green and white balls glued to the toes, bow already owned, and wings bought from etsy (for only $6 including shipping!).
The most expensive part was the morph suit, haha, the rest of our costumes were actually super cheap!
